blackwithtabs 22.10.0
The Somewhat Compromised Code Formatter
“Any color you like.”
This is not the official Black package! Get that
here.
Black (with tabs) is the uncompromising Python code formatter. By using it, you agree
to cede control over minutiae of hand-formatting. In return, Black (with tabs) gives
you speed, determinism, and freedom from pycodestyle nagging about formatting. You
will save time and mental energy for more important matters.
Oh, also, now it's using tabs for indentation instead of spaces. In general, whitespace
(except for the initial indent) in docstrings is left alone. Whitespace in multiline
string literals should always be left alone.
Tabs are good for indenting. Don't use them for alignment. No shade at folks who choose
spaces instead. We just prefer tabs.
Blackened code looks the same regardless of the project you're reading. Formatting
becomes transparent after a while and you can focus on the content instead.
Black (with tabs) makes code review faster by producing the smallest diffs possible.
Try out the original using the Black Playground. Watch the
PyCon 2019 talk to learn more.
IMPORTANT
Black (with tabs) does NOT provide a separate command line interface from the original
Black. It's still just black. So, they cannot coexist (without virtual environments,
anyways). Pick one!
Read the documentation on ReadTheDocs!
Installation and usage
Installation
Black (with tabs) can be installed by running pip install black-with-tabs. It
requires Python 3.7+ to run. If you want to format Jupyter Notebooks, install with
pip install 'black[jupyter]'.
If you can't wait for the latest hotness and want to install from GitHub...
Too bad!! We don't have the black-with-tabs source up publicly at the moment. Though
please email jrowley at marcusengineering dot com to receive a copy.
Usage
To get started right away with sensible defaults:
black {source_file_or_directory}
You can run Black (with tabs) as a package if running it as a script doesn't work:
python -m black {source_file_or_directory}
Further information can be found in our docs:
Usage and Configuration
Black is already successfully used by many
projects, small and big. Black has a comprehensive test suite, with efficient parallel
tests, and our own auto formatting and parallel Continuous Integration runner. Now that
we have become stable, you should not expect large formatting to changes in the future.
Stylistic changes will mostly be responses to bug reports and support for new Python
syntax. For more information please refer to the
The Black Code Style.
Also, as a safety measure which slows down processing, Black will check that the
reformatted code still produces a valid AST that is effectively equivalent to the
original (see the
Pragmatism
section for details). If you're feeling confident, use --fast.
The Black code style
Black is a PEP 8 compliant** opinionated formatter. Black reformats entire files
in place. Style configuration options are deliberately limited and rarely added. It
doesn't take previous formatting into account (see
Pragmatism
for exceptions).
Our documentation covers the current Black code style, but planned changes to it are
also documented. They're both worth taking a look:
The Black Code Style: Current style
The Black Code Style: Future style
Changes to the Black code style are bound by the Stability Policy:
The Black Code Style: Stability Policy
Please refer to this document before submitting an issue. What seems like a bug might be
intended behaviour.
** except, of course, Black (with tabs) is not using spaces for indentation...
Pragmatism
Early versions of Black used to be absolutist in some respects. They took after its
initial author. This was fine at the time as it made the implementation simpler and
there were not many users anyway. Not many edge cases were reported. As a mature tool,
Black does make some exceptions to rules it otherwise holds.
The Black code style: Pragmatism
Please refer to this document before submitting an issue just like with the document
above. What seems like a bug might be intended behaviour.
Configuration
Black is able to read project-specific default values for its command line options
from a pyproject.toml file. This is especially useful for specifying custom
--include and --exclude/--force-exclude/--extend-exclude patterns for your
project.
You can find more details in our documentation:
The basics: Configuration via a file
And if you're looking for more general configuration documentation:
Usage and Configuration
Pro-tip: If you're asking yourself "Do I need to configure anything?" the answer is
"No". Black is all about sensible defaults. Applying those defaults will have your
code in compliance with many other Black formatted projects.

Testimonials
James Rowley, engineer at Marcus Engineering:
Deferring to the judgement of this wonderful automated tool has saved so much time and
effort, not just in writing the code but of course in merging and reviewing it. But I
will never surrender my tabs!

Packaging
Executables made with PyInstaller will no longer crash when formatting several files
at once on macOS. Native x86-64 executables for macOS are available once again.
(#3275)
Hatchling is now used as the build backend. This will not have any effect for users
who install Black with its wheels from PyPI. (#3233)
Faster compiled wheels are now available for CPython 3.11 (#3276)
Blackd
Windows style (CRLF) newlines will be preserved (#3257).

option (#3282)
Update GitHub Action to support use of version specifiers (e.g. <23) for Black
version (#3265)
22.8.0
Highlights
Python 3.11 is now supported, except for blackd as aiohttp does not support 3.11 as
of publishing (#3234)
This is the last release that supports running Black on Python 3.6 (formatting 3.6
code will continue to be supported until further notice)
Reword the stability policy to say that we may, in rare cases, make changes that
affect code that was not previously formatted by Black (#3155)
Stable style
Fix an infinite loop when using # fmt: on/off in the middle of an expression or code
block (#3158)
Fix incorrect handling of # fmt: skip on colon (:) lines (#3148)
Comments are no longer deleted when a line had spaces removed around power operators
(#2874)
Preview style
Single-character closing docstring quotes are no longer moved to their own line as
this is invalid. This was a bug introduced in version 22.6.0. (#3166)
--skip-string-normalization / -S now prevents docstring prefixes from being
normalized as expected (#3168)
When using --skip-magic-trailing-comma or -C, trailing commas are stripped from
subscript expressions with more than 1 element (#3209)
Implicitly concatenated strings inside a list, set, or tuple are now wrapped inside

also respected, previously only .gitignore files in the project root and
automatically discovered directories were respected (#3237)

removes DeprecationWarning (#3164)
Remove logging from internal blib2to3 library since it regularly emits error logs
about failed caching that can and should be ignored (#3193)

3.7 due to standard library limitations. (#2874)
